I’m feeling so inspired!
Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting an inspirational and amazing young woman, who has dedicated herself to advocating self love and positivity. Abena Hagan, founder and managing director of CurlsAuNaturel is, through her children’s books, merchandise, public appearances and social media encouraging women and girls of African and Caribbean origin to love their natural hair embrace their beauty and ultimately ‘love the skin that they’re in’!
Further she encourages, self confidence and a positive- can – do attitude.
This approach to life is arguably becoming increasingly important in a world where we are taught to aspire to be everything that we are not and hate everything that we are. It’s everywhere and people are left feeling that the only way to be accepted and resolve these ‘issues’ is to conform to societies ideas of beauty.
What I love most about Abena’s work is that her message mirrors the very affirmations that I am trying to instil in my Pudding Pops (my why!). Until now, I didn’t have any resource, or point of reference to go to that strengthened the message that I was trying to deliver. It’s so important for every little girl to have confidence in herself, never give up, love herself and embrace her beauty. As soon as we got in the car after meeting Abena, pudding started to read one of the books that we had just bought, ‘I want to look like me’. She was full of excitement and couldn’t stop talking about how much the story reminded her of us…
Honestly, I was so happy. Finally, something she could relate to!
Abena’s passion for empowering women and young girls is infectious. Her message comes from her own affirmations and personal journey.
For us, she has helped to join the dots that I had been carefully arranging.
Her work has made one mummy and one precious little girl very, very happy.
